Analysis of Nigeria's Automobile and Automotive Parts Industry

25/05/2023

(China Africa Trade Research Center News) As Africa's second largest economy and the largest populous country, Nigeria's automotive and auto parts market also has a huge demand, mainly relying on imports. After years of operation by Chinese car companies, Chinese cars have established a considerable "prestige" in Nigeria.

Nigeria is rich in resources and the second largest economy in Africa, with a population of 180 million. It is the most populous country in Africa, with a car ownership of 5 million.

The potential of the automobile market in Nepal is significant, as the railway is backward and public transportation is underdeveloped. Automobiles have become necessary private tools, but due to economic development and national income levels, coupled with a significant gap between rich and poor, the market will still be dominated by low-priced and second-hand cars for a long time to come.

The demand for new cars in Nigeria is about 75000 vehicles per year, while the demand for second-hand cars exceeds 150000 vehicles per year, accounting for two-thirds of the total demand. About two-thirds of the existing vehicles are second-hand cars.

The majority of demand in the Nigerian automotive market comes from imports, including new and used cars. Nigeria is China's second largest export market in Africa, its main economic and trade partner in Africa, and the first country in the world to establish the renminbi as a reserve currency.

In recent years, bilateral trade between China and Nepal has developed rapidly, with strong economic strength, market capacity, development potential, and regional radiation capabilities for West Africa, Central Africa, and Northern Africa. Due to the predominance of highways in transportation in Nigeria, automobiles have become an important means of transportation, but Nigeria lacks its own national automotive industry. To meet the demand of the domestic automotive market, Nigeria imports a large number of cars.
